Construction Update…..November 2009

Mrs. Fleming’s Grade 3 class has been carefully watching the progress of our new school. We thought you might enjoy “seeing” the construction through their eyes…..

Construction

When the grade three’s went to go look at the construction site we saw a blue fence. It’s there so that no one can go in the construction site and get hurt. We also saw a huge pile of dirt with a big tarp over it so that it doesn’t get wet and turn to mud. We saw a rebar sandwich – that means that there is wood and then rebar and then wood again. Then we saw the foundation. It is made out of concrete. Then we saw a builder – he was cutting rebar with a chain saw and it was making sparks. Then we saw some machinery. We saw some cement trucks, a fork lift, a crane and a dump truck. We also heard some builders’ hammering and we saw them hammering.

For the first two months of school Mrs. Fleming’s class has been looking at the new school construction site. I have been wondering about how much the machinery has done. I have watched the big digging machine dig a big hole for the basement. The forklifter has moved big pieces of wood and long pieces of rebar. The cement truck carries gallons of cement to the site. A cement crane transfers the concrete to where it needs to go. But it doesn’t do it all by itself. There is always one or two workmen in the machine to press buttons or drive where they need to go. They are very big so they have a big fence so kids stay safe.

Our class has been looking at our new school. I saw lots of rebar and wood. The workers put the wood on the outside, rebar on the inside, then concrete in the inside with the rebar. It is kind of a rebar sandwich. When the concrete gets poured in, the workers let the concrete sit for a few days. After that they take the wood off. Then we will have concrete and rebar walls.

Me and my class went to go to see the new school building. It has a lot of wood. They put a fence up because they don’t want anybody to get hurt. People always do hard work. Me and my class saw some different shapes and some metal. People must be really careful. I wonder how old you have to be to work on the new school building?
